If now the passing over towards the professional activity of a martial arts/combat sport teacher is being structured from within it is inevitably evident that exactly like other enterprises the chief position is a managing position. Someone with this assumption has to in order to fullfil this position sucessfully to bring minimum competencies. These must be acquired already before the start of the new task.
Some examples of such minimum competencies are: marketing knowledge, commercial thinking and acting, in the case of international activities - foreign language(s), entrepreneurial thinking, ability to learn, team capabilities, communication abilities, abilities to motivate, social competencies, etc.
If the competencies are watched more closely then it will be seen that these cannot be acquired by mere martial arts/combat sports training because in so-called ‚martial arts traditions' that are outlived to the most these competencies were never a mandatory. If now the reliance on traditions as garantuee for success is predominant then it might well happen that failure will occur on the long run. For the acquisition of the above described comepetencies an intensive study is needed. For the study itself it is nessecary to invest in time and financial means. This can be compared to the study of the Master of Business Adminastration (MBA) who additionally has to study martial arts techniques as well.
Furthermore it is to consider if in today's time this investment in this not officially acknowledged profession is worthwile and means a security. Questions like: Can I secure my pension scheme with this? Can I secure a solid health insurance? Can I secure my future or even family sustenance?
These questions .... and others must be considered in order to gauge a realistic chance and not to fail before even started...... Many people that manage martial arts / combat sport clubs have made the experience in the meantime that this proferssion emerging out of the hobby status has shown as a fallacy and wrong decision.
Let us do a simple and gross calculation of monthly costs that are mandatory in order to work according to the demand of a professional:
Monthly calculation:
1. The position of rent does relate to an appr. 200m² hall excl. side costs in a city on a middle rent level, not inner city ring. Otherwise the position will increase further.
2. VAT and income tax
| single | family/one child | |
| rent [1] | 800 | 800 |
| side cost | 300 | 300 |
| Advertising | 300 | 300 |
| Health insurance | 400 | 600 |
| pension scheme | 400 | 500 |
| own salary | 1500 | 2200 |
| taxes [2] | 1500 | 1300 |
| balance | 5200 | 6100 |
Vacation budgets, car and other side costs must be taken from the salary or the calculation has to be increased even further. Now if these balances are to be retrograded into monthly fees of in general 35 EUR in order to obtain the number of the minimun studentship a minimum of 205 students for the single and 240students for the family case must be constantly upheld. That means: actually 350 students must be enrolled because from today's experience one third pay late or only enforced or not at all. Considering now today's chances to built up a studentship of 350 in a city on a middle level then chances are very small to keep this constantly for timespan of 30 years. The targeted group for martial arts finds the most different other opportunities locally as also generally other leisure time activity offers shrink the chances and do not let any secure planning be feasible. Resulting from this it is mandatory to expand the working radius which leads to higher rental costs because in any other city a training hall must be present. Additionally to the added rental costs costs for personal will also rise in form of enlisted instructors because they are a mandatory factor in keeping up the training schedule in all areas.
Should this calculation now demotivate? Not at all - it is merely supposed to warn that the activity of a professional martial arts / combat sports teacher is not to be taken on lightheartedly in order not to see at a very high age that another more secure way would have been much better!
